Course Code: MMAEHP01

Course Title: Developing and promoting health and wellbeing: concepts and issues

College: IoE

Course Director: Ian Warwick

Course Description: The overall aim of the module is to introduce you to key concepts and issues in the promotion of health and well-being. You will examine ways that health and well-being have been conceptualised. You will also consider how a range of factors - from those that are structural in nature to those that are more individually or interpersonally focused - influence health and well-being. Following an overview of key approaches to, or models of, health promotion, you will be asked to apply what you have learned to a health-related topic or issue of particular interest to you. Throughout the module you will be encouraged to examine your understanding of your own professional practice and how best to develop it.

By the end of the module you will be able to:

  • Understand some of the values and forms of knowledge that underpin your own professional practice with regard to promoting health and wellbeing;
  • Identify ways that health and well-being have been understood and explained;
  • Examine how a range of factors at the macro, meso (or middle) and micro levels, influence health and well-being;
  • Critically appraise the strengths and areas for development of approaches to, and models of, health promotion;
  • Explore how your understanding of health and well-being contributes to your own professional practice.
