Course Title: Development education in the era of globalisation

Course Description: Note: Principles and Practicies of Dev Ed is a pre-requisite for this course, although prior experience many also be taken into account. This second core module aims to develop greater understanding of the theory and practice of development education within the context of learning and living within a global society. It addresses the relevance of learning about development and global issues within the context of skills for a global economy and debates on complex and multiple identities.

The course demonstrates the connections between development education and current debates about the role and purpose of education both within the UK and internationally.

As a result of completing this module, students will have:

  • a greater understanding of the relationship between debates on globalisation and development education?
  • developed skills to critically assess approaches to development education within diverse countries?
  • be able to asses how development education relates to the discourses on global citizenship and education for sustainable development?
  • gained appreciation of the challenges development education practitioners face in a range of countries
Specifically participants on the course should be able to:
  • identify and assess a range of theoretical perspectives on globalisation and their implications for policies and practices in development education?
  • evaluate how development education practices in two contrasting countries have been influenced by globalisation and debates on learning within a global society?
  • critique the views and practices of fellow students in how they have responded to debates on development education and globalisation within their own country and working environment?
  • Identify the value of the discourse and policy formulations around being a global citizen' and sustainable futures' for development education practice.

Assessment: 1 Written Paper (5,000 words)

Course Credit: This course offers 30 credits that can be transfered to IoE Certificate, Diploma or Masters-level programmes, on consultation with the IoE Registry

Course Study Hours/Duration: 300hrs over 12 weeks of study and assessment

Schedule of Availability: Oct - Dec (enrolment by 30th July) / Jan - March (enrolment by 21st November)
