Learning to live together: children's rights, citizenship and identities
Course Code: 91CHI0070
Course Title: Learning to live together: children's rights, citizenship and identities
College: IoE
Course Director: Hugh Starkey
Course Description: This course examines how we can effectively educate for living together in a multicultural
and multifaith globalised world. It identifies rights, citizenship, and exploring identities as key
agendas for education.
When education is viewed as a holistic experience including participation in wider society, it
leads to the further question of the extent to which this is consistent with compulsory
schooling. This is a current tension in much education policy and, more broadly, in societies
across the world. The view of children and young people as active citizens with rights who
need more opportunities for participation contrasts with a view of them as objects to be
educated and controlled.
These are some of the main issues that we will be exploring in detail in this unit. You will
engage with an agenda that challenges many of the traditions and procedures that we have
been used to accepting in schools.
This course aims:
- To introduce and evaluate the implications of the principles enshrined in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) with respect to provision, protection and participation.
- To engage critically with research evidence and academic literature that applies CRC principles specifically to issues of teaching and learning for citizenship.
- To explore the academic literature on the relationship between citizenship and identities.
- To evaluate critically concepts such as children's multiple identities and cosmopolitan citizenship.
- To exemplify education policies for equalities and democracy, particularly in the light of legislative frameworks that guide schools and teachers.
- To engage with, and critically analyse, relevant learning and teaching materials.
