Course Description: Education systems in developing and middle-income countries are struggling with common but unique issues and dilemmas: How to keep up with the rapidly changing quality standards for knowledge and skills; how to deliver educational services to a broader range of the population, equipped with a wide range of skills and interests; and how to diversify the sources of financing and manage them more effectively. Confronting these issues and dilemmas require sufficient knowledge in educational planning and the analytical techniques employed. There is also need for a broader understanding of the process of educational planning in the context of national education policy and international development goals.
The module therefore aims to:
- Provide an international perspective on collaborative education planning within and between non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and inter-governmental organisations (IGOs; bi-lateral agencies), the private sector, and governments.
- Consider a range of strategies that put ideas into action' to address the contemporary demands on education including: social justice and equity, overcoming social exclusion, complex emergencies, nations in transition, and the new global risk' problems.
- Pay particular attention to regions in which improvement in education is seen as most urgent to ensure the positive survival of individuals and communities- particularly in relation to poverty, environmental problems, and conflict.
