Course Description: The course aims to:

  • encourage critical understanding of the key principles and practices of development education?
  • stimulate reflection on the relationship between theoretical perspectives on development education and the engagement of the student in their own delivery of development education?
  • promote greater understanding of the value of a range of perspectives and approaches to both the theory and practice of development education;
As a result of completing the course, you will have:
  • a greater understanding of the relationship between development and development education?
  • developed skills to critically assess approaches to development education and relate them to your own perspectives and experiences?
  • be able to have an increased appreciation of the cultures and social foundations of a range of development education practices.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        
Specifically participants on the course should be able to:
  • identify and assess a range of theoretical perspectives and positions on development education?
  • critique a wide range of professional and academic articles and other publications on development education?
  • identify, reflect and reassess their own views and perspectives on development education and locate them within debates in the field?
  • critique the views and perspectives of fellow students, to understand the basis of their positions and where they are located within wider debates?
  • reflect on the range of views on development and assess their value to the principles and practices of development education?
  • evaluate the extent to which different views on development education are located within different cultural paradigms?
  • develop increased knowledge, skills and an enhanced value base to apply development education within their own or planned work environment.

Assessment: 2 Written Papers; Assignment 1 (1,500 words) 20% / Assignment 2 (3,500 words) 80%

Course Credit: This course offers 30 credits that can be transfered to IoE Certificate, Diploma or Masters-level programmes, on consultation with the IoE Registry

Course Study Hours/Duration: 300hrs over 12 weeks of study and assessment

Schedule of Availability: Oct - Dec (enrolment by 30th July) / Jan - March (enrolment by 21st November)
