Training for development education
Course Code: MMALEI 01
Course Title: Training for development education
College: IoE
Course Director: Clare Bentall
Course Description: This course focuses primarily on the process of creating effective learning environments and facilitating effective learning about global issues. It is a mixed mode module being a combination of face to face and on line learning environments.
You will develop your abilities to create effective learning environments and facilitate effective learning about global issues by:
- Deepening your knowledge of theories of learning and exploring their relevance for promoting learning about global issues, social justice and sustainable development
- Applying your learning directly to your practice as trainers
- Developing your abilities to reflect critically on your knowledge, skills, attitudes and values as trainers
The course assumes that in order to work effectively to promote learning about global issues, you need to explore what learning is in the context of development education, with its core values and aims of promoting action and change. You will explore theories of learning and consider the implications for your work as a trainer, drawing on your experience, that of your colleagues, fellow students and tutors and on the literature. You will apply this in practical experience of training either in your work place, through invitations to train from organisations you make contact with or through peertraining.
As pedagogy within Development Education is focused on increasing learners abilities in critical thinking and understanding, as a prerequisite for action, the course will therefore ask you to consider the type of impact you are concerned your learners will have.
By the end of the course you will be able to
- critically analyse theories of learning and their application to training for development education
- create effective learning environments appropriate for exploring global issues
- · use critical reflection as a tool for their personal development as a trainer
- critically appraise resources and their relevance to learning about global issues and incorporate them into learning programmes
- critically engage with the tensions in your work as trainers between international, national, local and institutional priorities and development education values
- promote learning about global issues, through the use of the elements of the training cycle, for a variety of groups and contexts
